caring for your herb garden

rosemaryWhen you first begin caring for the herbs that you have planted it is good practice to keep a small journal so that you can enter any relevant information about your plants.  This is a particularly useful tool for keeping track of information that you may not necessarily remember but may be handy to reference later on.

A good example of something that you may want to put in this journal is which plants are annual and which are perennial.  Anything else that you may find useful to record in this journal to help you care for your herbs is definitely recommended.  You can also use it to keep track of many other useful things such as how many of each particular type of herb that you planted or how often they need watering.

Each plant has specific needs and you should make a note of these needs in your journal so that you can be sure that you herbs are receiving the optimum care that they require.  Most herbal plants require a high degree of humidity to thrive properly and if you live in a climate that is particularly dry then this may mean that you will have to spray your plants regularly with a fine mist of water so that they will remain properly hydrated.  This is very important because you don’t want your plants to dry up and die from a lack of moisture.

Another thing to pay attention to is the amount of sun that a particular type of plant may require. Many require at least four hours of exposure to direct sunlight in order to thrive.  Other plants grow better in indirect sunlight and should be planted accordingly.  If your plants are getting the wrong level of sunlight whether it is to little or too much it can still affect the overall health of the garden.  This is a very important consideration and it should be thought out well in advance of actually planting your garden.

As stated earlier, one good way to be sure that your herbs are getting the proper amount of sun is to plant them in containers that can be moved throughout the day.  This is a great way to ensure that your plants are getting the proper exposure to the sun that they require in order to be healthy and produce good results.

Depending on the quality of soil you should also consider giving your herbs the proper amount of fertilizer so that they can grow into full, healthy, and beautiful plants that will not only produce well but look beautiful in the process.
